i have been hearing this ticking noise...similar to a valve tap, but it only happens under load...sometime when cold also but not all the time like a valve ...any suggestions? i think it maybe an exhaust manifold...but how can i check to make sure? i have an f350 5.4 L...if it is an exhaust manifold should i go with headers? or are they not worth the money and agravation...
your going to have to chk for broken exhaust studs or missing nuts,or even a cracked or rusted through manifold. common problem.
Stay away from headers just my 2 cents
Better chk all the sparkplugs for being tight ,you don't want one to spit out on ya and take the threads in the al head with it.

yes ,
if you just changed them and torqued them to spec they shouldn't have loosened up so soon.
but we have seen bad sparkplugs leak around the ceramic part of the plug.
chk your exhaust first ,then go from there.

hey fortyfords...
i checked all the plugs...good and tight, after that i found the passanger side manifold has a broken stud...
now what???? can i remove the stud without removing the manifold? if not is this a job i could do inmy driveway...im very handy and have a lot of tools, but have never attempted a manifold before. thanks again for all the help
Well if the stud sticks out past the manifold ,you might get lucky and grab it or mig or tig a bolt to it and turn it out.but if its off at the aluminum head that sucks !
you will need to remove the exhaust and drill it out retap and get the new ss stud kit from Ford.
