Tick Tick Tick

I am kinda a noob but mechanically inclined-- (and yes I did a couple searches) I just put a 4bl intake manifold on my 1965 352 (it was off of a 1966 390) but now I have a tick tick -- I am thinking it is valve lash noise-- and it needs to be adjusted--- What is the best way to adjust the valves? I think I can do it-- just not 100% sure the best way on an FE--- The book says 0 valve lash-- -- but is there a proffered method?

thanks in advance.

Doesn't a '65 352 use non-adjustable hydraulic lifters? If so you really only set a preload usually.

I wonder, with the new intake manifold, if your rocker pushrods are clearing it 100%. You can get a ticking from the pushrods (any one or more) hitting the openings in the manifold that they pass through.

Pull your valve covers and see if the exhaust crossover (head to intake manifold) is leaking. It runs through the manifold between #3 and #6 cylinders.

Make sure all the rockers are in there positions.
The springs between them (that are on the rocker shaft) aren't the strongest and sometimes they can move which could cause the pushrod to hit the clearance holes in the manifiold.

I should also mention that a stock 352 does not have any adjustments on the valve train.

FE solid lifters, adjustable rocker arms:

Misc 1958/64 Passenger Car 332/352/390/406/427 / 1965 390 & 1966 428 Galaxie/LTD Police Cruisers / 1966/69 Fairlane/Torino & 1967/69 Mustang/Cougar 390 hipo's / 1965/67 Galaxie/LTD 427's.

None of these engines were installed in F100/350's, 1965 was the first year for FE.

100% correctamundo...when applied to F100/350's with 352's...which is what you were referring to.

If no tick before swapping intake/exhaust manifold and Carb suggest looking for another source before disassembling. Had similar problem and may sound ridiculous, which is what I said when suggested to me, use a short hose and place in various locations to see if able to narrow the source, I found the source w/in 30 sec's. May want to start around exhaust manifold, I had a heck of a time with the 390 getting gasket to seat properly the first time around; or perhaps an ignition wire issue?? best way to tell is to run engine after dark and pop the hood?? Anyhow, food for thought?

If establish need to adjust for zero lash, I was not familiar so on my 68 302 found it means there's an ever so slight of drag on the push rod as I tightened the rocker arm.

Hopefully, you kept track of the pushrods and reinstalled them in their original locations. The bolts for the rocker shafts are different. The tapered bolt gets installed in the hole with the oil gallery. The rocker shafts can bend, unless the engine is rotated to the proper position. Good luck.

The exhaust manifolds go tick - tick - tick because there aren't any gaskets, cuz Ford never installed them...metal to metal.

When the manifolds warp: tick - tick - tick.
