I have a e350 v10, 170k miles, the engine makes a ticking noise. Its coming from the head (near the exhaust manifold) area by #9 cylinder, best I can tell with a highly accurate rubber tube in my ear . The tick is the same at startup and warm. Increases frequency with rpm and never goes away. You can listen to it here:

It's gotta be a valve or wrist pin. If it's up in the head, it's a valve.
I didn't listen to it before, just did. Definitely a valve.
I'd pull the valve cover on that side and see what you find.
It could just be a lash adjuster (lifter) that isn't "adjusting", or it could be the roller on the follower is worn out (get that fixed quick if it hasn't already ruined the cam lobe), or a valve guide that's totally shot.
With the OHC, I wouldn't try running the engine with the valve cover off
I can't hear it very well on the audio. If it's coming from the manifold it may be the manifold gasket. I know from past vehicles that it can cause a ticking sound while the engine is running and doesn't go away.
Pulled the valve cover yesterday, not an easy task on a van. Found one lash adjuster with no pressure after I removed it, replaced it. The rollers are fine, no real loose valves that i could tell, nothing loose. I put it back together, started it, still ticking like a bomb.
Its definitely a metal to metal sound but its very hard to locate. I don't see any evidence of it up top. It seems to have the same frequency as the injector for cylinder 10, which made me think #10 intake valve but its it all looks tight to me.
I don't know if you have a V-10 with the early PI heads. I have a 2002 4.6 with the early PI heads and have had a ticking sound that appeared to be caused by an exhaust manifold leak. Could not find any evidence of an exhaust leak. I loosened and retorqued all the spark plugs, no change, still ticking. I began using separate maintenance dosages of an oil and a fuel treatment in June. The ticking is gone. The engine is quiet now. And by the way I'm extremely "a**l" about vehicle maintenance so the ticking was not due to neglect.
I read on this site that the early PI heads had a cooling problem with the rear cylinders which caused the exhaust valve to hang up and cause ticking. My wife has a 2005 version of the 4.6, in which they "fixed" the head cooling problem. She's had no problem with engine ticking.
I have a tick that sounds EXACTLY like yours Stacy. I always had a slight tick that I attributed to leaking exhaust manifolds due to stud breakage. But about a week after my oil change it got loud like yours. I don't personally think that this tick is an exhaust leak although I REALLY hope it is as I have a set of headers on the way. One thing I have noticed though is that the ticking is louder inside the fender well and under the truck through the exhaust.
