Dash pad replacement tips

I did not see any tips or tricks posted for a dash pad replacement on a early '77. How hard is it??

Thanks

Are you looking for advice on removing the dash pad or finding a replacement?

Removing the dash pad is pretty easy. There are eight screws/nuts holding it on. To get to them, you need to pull out the instrument cluster and glovebox. I've outlined how to do it in some other threads and I know other people have explained it several times before. Do a quick search in this forum for "remove dash pad" or something and you should find a couple good threads explaining where all the screws are.

Super easy. Pull the gauge cluster and dash liner out, and reach up. You will feel the studs poking through with nuts on 'em. Just dont forget the one in front in the middle, facing the firewall. You can do it in about 45 minutes on your first try. If you've never pulled a speedo cable before, then you should squeeze the plastic retainer on the end until it's an oval, and then pull it out. Also there are 2 retainers on the elec. connector, 1 at each end. Just squeeze and pull that also. For inspiration I recommend Budweiser Select. Hope this helps.

Both of these replies are extremely helpful. I did some thread searches but did not use the correct words I guess since i could not find it. Thanks for the replies as I am new to this truck.

Another option is a "Dash cover" that slips over the dash pad - thin and usually fits like a form-fit. They come in several colors and also come in vinyl or carpet-like to match your floor. Several companies offer each of the above.

George and Cookie, does the cover look as good as they make it sound? My interior is black so color is not a problem. $79 sure beats $299 any day.

Have you checked any junkyards? I've seen one every once and a while in good shape. If you're lucky you might be able to find one without cracks that you just have to clean or maybe paint.

I have a local yard that has three trucks that I know of. One truck is a '73 and one is a '79 (I don't know about the third yet) but I am still learning the years that fit on different pieces and trying to compare it with parts catologues. Any advice?

The dash pad is the same from 73-79. Most parts for those years are interchangable.

Just a thought - I have used model car spray paint for several things auto. 1. It's made for plastic and there are a lot of colors and shades of each. 2. It works on "plastic" windows for tinting. There is a "Window Tint" (charcoal) for model cars that CAN be used on most plastics. All the above - Dust-coat till the desired tint or darkness happens. For dark GLASS windows, there is a window film ( in diff shades ) that can be applied. Normal soap/water prep.
