Padded Dash

My 66 has the original black padded dash and I'm considering removing it.

I've heard that all 66's came with padded dashes. Is this true, or could you get a 66 without it?

I like the look of a metal dashboard, and my dash has one big crack in it that bugs me. If the paint under the pad is as nice as most of the rest of the paint on my truck, I may not replace the pad.

Don,

I had every intention of replacing the padded dash. But after the paint I really liked the look without.

See the link to look. Good luck

How do you get the residue off without hurting the paint.

My '66 was an unmolested CC when I bought it and did not come with a dash pad - to answer the first question you asked.

Naptha should work fine for removing residue. Aka "lighter fluid". Coleman or Blazo is same thing. Also sold at paint stores.

I used Goo-Gone. Goof-off removes the paint.

According to this page in the '66 brochure, padded dash was standard.

I've seen more 66 modle without the dash pad; mainly a Custom cab option; Several trucks (66 & 65) model don't have the dash trim chrome to secure the pad to front panel of the dash; nor the clip holes in the dash panel;makes me state this comment. Not just a two tone style interior either. The dash pad trim along the windshields and across the front dash panel. But I could me wrong.

Limegold, I see what you're talking about on page 5, but . . . my unmolested '66 CC doesn't have the supposedly standard emergency flashers either (in addition to the missing dash pad). Guess the publicity department and the assembly factories weren't talking to each other. Which brings up another possibility . . . maybe they were standard from some assembly plants but other plants didn't have enough parts. I don't know. My truck was built in early September, 1965 (I have the build sheet), making it early in the 1966 model year production run. Perhaps it was a mid-model year addition, like the availability of power steering was.

Can you post up a pic of the build sheet? I got one with one of my trucks and just wanted to compare since not a lot of build sheets around.

The 1966 Salesmans Facts Book For Light Trucks says the padded dash was standard everywhere other than one option in F250 4x4 series for a Delete Padded Dash.

F100 2wd

F100 4wd

F250 2wd

F250 4wd

F350

But, you just know if it was an option at all that someone would have to have it (or not as the case may be) on their truck. Or it was an assembly line workers truck. Or the pad was remove after it left the factory. I took my pad off and cleaned where it was and not so much as a hint that it was there. I did it without even removing the bright trim pieces that surround the dash pad.

After 48 years I know I'd changed a lot despite trying to keep myself "all original". Lol.

Here's the build sheet from my white F250 4x4 so you don't feel like I'm being one-sided or anything like that. Hahaha

I hope I have attached a scan of my build sheet. This seems like a hijack job to me so I'll apologize now. Just doing as I was asked. You probably won't be able to see enough contrast to read it since it's a bit the worse for wear, it having spent over 45 years tucked into the seat back springs before I found it in December, 2010. If you like, probably in a separate post, I'll give you the codes in the boxes. It being a DSO vehicle, the specific two tone paint scheme - in this case Wimbledon White and Emberglow - and paint specs is listed at the bottom of the first page and on into the second page. Hope this helps.

Cool.

So what I'm seeing is that the padded dash was standard in 66, but an option was to have it deleted.

I guess my pad is coming off. I can't tell you how curious I am to see what the paint looks like underneath. It's the original pad and has never been off the truck....and with the exception of a few thin spots, the original paint on this truck is just beautiful.

I guess if I hate it, I can always buy another black pad and replace it.
