Pull the small boot on the tranny up around the shifter, push down the stamped steel collar, and turn it a quarter turn counter-clockwise. It's a pain to do, most people just pull the top cover.

The stamped cap has tangs on it that engage those pins inside the cover.

When everythings clean, oiled and assembled wrap a 6" wide rag around the shifter top snout and shift lever 3 or 4 times then secure with duct tape. This will prevent road dirt and dust from grinding up that aluminum socket and shifter ball.
I replaced a shifter top and lever because of dirt wear and a sloppy shift pattern, the new cover had over 940K miles, looked and shifted as if like new.

Third owner has odie back at 00000.1 miles again last febuary.
The body (8' utility step) is now beat to hell but then people stay out of his way and he likes that. He calls me everytime odie goes to zero. Pulls boats from the S.F. bay area to Shasta Lake.
