I would have to agree some other posters and say you should check on a chip. I, and many others, started with a tuner. I had a Predator (still do for the code reading capability) and it was pretty good. For a few more bucks, I got a DP Tuner 6 position flip chip and I would never go back. It really is nice to change tunes on the fly. Not saying you shouldn't get a tuner, just do some research, consider all the options and your specific needs first.
Whatever you get, I would at least invest in a set of gauges, an intake (the 6637 is very cheap, do a search) and exhaust. If you can't afford a complete 4" exhaust, at least do a muffler delete or Walker BTM (big truck muffler), they are under $60 shipped. I started with the BTM and went to a 4" when i had a little more cash. Have fun!

You're welcome buddy, anytime .
A DP-Tuner chip is basically a piggy-back computer chip that you plug into the back of the truck's ECM. It can be programmed with many different tunes based on your needs/wants. My suggestion to you would be to visit the website and get the phone number, then call and talk to Jody Tipton. He's a nice guy and if you tell him exactly what you're looking to get out of a chip/tuner he will shoot you straight and give you good advice. I will say that his products will probably cost you a little more than the 1705 would, but it's well worth the money.
Since I have owned a 1705 and an Edge box already, I can tell you honestly that the performance of the truck with the DP-Tuner chip is the best by far. OH and his chips are custom for your truck, so buying one used from Ebay is a bad idea in my opinion. Just give the man a call or email him directly, he'll be helpful.
The very first thing I bought for my truck after I bought it was a 1705 tuner. I can't say there was anything really bad about it, the truck ran much better and had more power with it's tunes. I think the problem you'll find with it is that changing the power levels is a pain for one, and you'll see that most people who started with one ended up selling it eventually to get into something better like a DP-Tuner flip chip. I've gone from the 1705, to the Edge J/A, to DP-Tuner and I wish I would of saved myself some money and time and just asked questions like you have here.
Do yourself a favor and get some gauges if you're going to be towing with this truck before you mess with the power level. In town it's hard to really push these trucks unloaded to create dangerous EGT level so you *could* run the 1705 without gauges (I did). Then I would recommend saving yourself the time and money and call Jody Tipton at DP-Tuner when you're ready to buy a chip. Just my .02
+1 FROM ME TOO. VERY GOOD ADVICE....SPEAKING FROM EXPERIENCE
I'm running a 1705 and enjoy it, I have learned that you might want to go the DP since you can shift on the fly, as it is, I have to stop the truck plug in, download the info, 5 minutes later I can be on my way. Make SURE that you get a full 1705 if you are ordering on E-bay, the system works by downloading the codes into the computer, it is possible to download the code and then sell the unit. It is then "locked up" and can only be used to check codes. Super chips will not cover it. So listen to the folks and do it right the first time. I have a switchable unit in my 02 Jetta Turbo Diesel and it's nice to switch on the fly. If I had know Jody's wife had a Diesel Bug... Plus Jody can (so I hear) give you a setting that acts as a cheap kill switch (no start) that might come in handy with bad people around.
One last point, when you use the 1705 it makes the throttle much more sensative, I had to relearn foot pressure and it will jump in certain situations.
I keep having to learn to buy the best and never have to buy twice, that's why I'm going Torklift on the new/used camper I have.
thanks sam! I'm just worried how much the DP is gonna run me after it gets shiped from the USA ?? Duty and all that good stuff? But yes I'm leaning more to the DP!
Rusty, I purchased a tuner off of ebay and it did not work on my truck. Had to send it back and get a refund. To much hassle. I am taking these other guys advice and looking into a dp tuner. I have read that dp's 40 hp setting gives you more power than superchip's 100 hp setting. Good luck!
