You guys with six speed trannies have any reccomendations for me. I'm in need of a bigger truck, and I haven't had a manual in years, and i miss the power, the mileage and the longevity. My year range is probably 99 - 02 for price.
It appears you're wanting a 7.3... I'd personally recommend either an 02 or early 03. They had the highest rated stock HP.. along with other appearance things I prefer.
6 spd is the only way to go. If you do any towing it is nice because you can pick what gear is best for power band and mpg is usually better with the manual.
The six speeds are great. The clutch leaves a little something to be desired. Luckily there are a couple of really good options on better clutch setups that include a larger flywheel surface- more holding power with less effort. The six speeds are a big strong tranny. I'd recommend a late 99 or early 2000 to get the forged rods in the motor though. You're going to change the programming anyway if your'e anything like most of us on here.
a while ago i was thinking of selling my truck to get one just like it in manual. couldn't find one and i didnt want to take a big loss or make a compromise. i figure a built BTS slushbox is as close to a 6 speed as im going to get. i drive my automatic with the TC locked 95% of the time and i let it shift like a manual.
I believe they had forged rods up to late 2001. I've a six speed and love it. Just have to start dumping money into all the mods now (already have predator tuner, gauges, and kwik filter). By the way, if you do get a 6 spd I would highly suggest not getting a tuner. My throttle is way to tempermental.

Put me on the wish list for a 6-spd manual. When I was looking to buy, for the life of me I could not find a 6-spd in the configuration I wanted (Shortbox, supercab 4x4). Most of the 6-spds I found were duallies and dump trucks. After a few months I gave in and got a slusher...and it slushy
And yes some 01 models do have forged rods, it all depends on when your motor was built prior to having it installed in the truck at the factory. My 01 has forged rods, the motor was built in late 2000.
Found a late 99 (according to badges) here in UT with looks like a 4" lif 35's approx. and 6spd. Listing shows 74000 miles I believe. Just thought I would let you all know, I hear alot of people say they wish they could find them.
