You can also stick your finger in the number 1 hole while turning the motor over. When it Pushes on your finger you have it. That is just another suggestion that will require two people. Just my 2 cents.
With your spark plugs out, which I'd assume are, you put your thumb over #1 spark plug hole, and when it pressurizes air against your thumb(either by blowing your thumb off or you feeling the pressure) then YOU KNOW it's on the compression stroke and once to the top, it's at TDC.
