I have an engine that is almost completely torn apart, but I am leaving the crankshaft and pistons in because they are in great shape.
The block has a lot of gunk and grease on it.
Is it okay to pressure wash the block? Do I need to cover the pistons? I thought maybe I could pour some acetone down the cylinders after I dry the engine off to get the moisture out but I am not sure about that.
I would not pressure wash it till you get the covers back on the engine. Wipe out the intake valley area. Wipe out and spot clean the area around the timing chain.
Clean the oil pan and valve covers while they are off the engine. mainly the insides. You could pressure wash them if you like. Also the intake while it's off. Make sure to dry this stuff with compressed air to dry it out.
If you want to clean the outside of the block, I would wait till most of the engine is put back together and sealed up. Seal any open holes with something and then pressure wash it. If you wanted to clean the outside of the block now, I would be careful and try to clean it with a can of carb or brake clean and a scraper, trying not to get anything inside the block.
There are too many places water can get in with a pressure washer like it is now.
Yes you do not pressure wash that short block when the crank and internals are exposed. Wait to do that when the engine is sealed up. You can scape and wipe
and what ever else to clean while it it exposed.
