answer :Just ask the Q ....
my 86 4X4 F250. I hav driven it fror a couple weeks. yesterday on a short trip, the dash abs and brake lights come on. i notice a power drag and smell hot brake shoe. it finally locks up the rear wheels. L8er on after it cooled down, it was able to roll again. Do these symptoms point @ any known brake problem?
You have ABS on a 1986 truck? I thought that wasn't availabe until 1987.
If you have ABS (I'll assume you do ) then it sounds like your ABS valve has gummed up internally and isn't letting the rear shoes retract like they should. I've seen it happen on Ford trucks before.
Thanks Andym, I hav never heard of an abs causing problems B4. I had bled the rear throughly and saw no sign of 'gumming' @ that time. How can I check 4 gumming or is it R&R time. You r correct it is an '87', it was first sold in '86'.
What happens is that it doesn't let the fluid retract the shoes after you press the brakes. The shoes are still pressing against the drum, and it will give you those symptoms. After a while, the springs in the drum are able to put enough pressure on the fluid so that it backs off enough to allow the wheel to turn. Then you hit the brakes and try it all over again.
What I would do in this case is get a piece of brake line and bypass the ABS valve. They're expensive to replace and the rear ABS system sucks anyway.
Thanks again Andym, Yer my kind of wrench. if it don't work, eliminate it. I'll do that right now and give the results. I Really appreciate yer takin the time 4 me. The truck is still a cream puff @ 20yrs. Thx ddmcsc
