Mechanic states that the lower ball joints needs replacement and then a realignemt will be required due to this. He is telling me that $925.00 will get the job done. I have a 1991 -1997 repair manual and am going to dio it myself if this is the cost of repair. Just got laid off so time is not a factor. Any advice on parts / ttols or tricks of the trade to mark thread positions would be appreciated.

I went with Moog replacement ball joints for the sole purpose that they are regreasable, and have lifetime warrenty. Their reputation is pretty solid. They can be found reasonably priced at www.rockauto.com. What type of vehicle are we talking about here? On my 97 F150, it is a pretty straightforward and simple job if you pay attention to what you are doing and have the correct tools. If your truck happens to fall within the 97-03 F150 range here is a thread that covers it a little better. Good Luck.
I get almost everthing for my truck from NAPA. The have it in stock and the parts have not let me down yet. Plus the price is good. Tell them you are a Fedex employee. They don;t ask for proof and the price drops about 20% right away.
I get everything from http://www.autopartswarehouse.com. Plus if i cant do something myself my mechanic lets me bring the stuff to him and charges me labor. He wanted $25-30 over for brakes and rotors than what I paid at this place...every dollar helps.
It depends on what year your truck is. It also depends (a lot) on whether it's 4x4 or not. In general, you'll need a ball joint press, a big hammer, and a general assortment of hand tools.
One thing is that I would definitely not go through all the work of tearing it down to the knuckle and not replace both upper and lower ball joints.
I would personally skip everything that you can buy at Napa, Autozone, etc. Napa's quality has gone down quite a bit the last few years. Moog makes the best suspension parts you can get.
