I just purchased a set of powerstop brake pads for the rear disk brakes on my 2003 Ford E-350 van.I noticed there is only 2 self-stick brake shims in the box which confused me.I thought there would be 4 and was wondering if anyone knows if my application would only require 2.If not I'll ask them to ship me 2 more but I was hoping to do this work soon and don't want to start the job without the right parts.
Not knowing what the 2003 van pads look like, on other vehicles, the piston side pad with the clip does not have the shim, the outboard pad does.
My neighbor who is a mechanic just told me the same thing thing.Apparantly only the outbound pads require the shims. He did warn me about the parking brake which can be a real hassle on these rear disk set-ups.He said changing the disk pads is very straight-forward but sometimes the shoes for the parking brake just crumble and they're no fun to replace.Hopefully at 19K I'll get lucky with that and not need to replace them as well.
As it turns out the rear brakes on my 2003 E-350 with 19K on it weren't even close to due for pads.My Ford dealer just inspected it and said the rear brakes barely passed inspection. It didn't make sense to me due to the 19K on my truck and if anything I would have thought the fronts would have needed replacement first.I already had the wheel off and the new pads ready to go so I put the new pads on anyway.I guess next time I should inspect the pads from the back of the rotor instead of trusting my dealer who obviously wanted to sell a brake job that day.The pads were maybe 40% worn at most.I even checked the fronts next to see if he made an honest mistake but they were also far from needing replacement.I was just wondering if anyone knew if a special tool is needed to remove the front calipers.I noticed it wasn't a standard hex bolt like the rears were.I want to be ready when the fronts are due for replacement. Thanks
