Have a 96 F350 with a 460 gas motor.. Today I changed the oil, oil filter, put some coolant in the reservoir, and serviced my K&N air filter.. Went to start it up and the check engine light went on... Double checked the electrical plug to the airbox (which is the only thing I can think of) and everything looks fine..
Any idea what I can check next? What can possibly be triggering the light with the minor stuff I did? I don't have a code reader so can't tell what it is..
go to the parts store and buy a code reader for $30, or fordfuelinjection.com
Well go to parts store and see if they can pull you codes. I do not think fordfuelinjection.com is going to help much with a 96 or you will be able to buy a reader for under a $100.00.
If you can get them to pull your codes post them back and we will try to help you.
Before you spend $50 driving to the auto parts store, check all your vacuum lines. They get brittle and break easily, or you could have inadvertently bumped one loose in everything else you did. With a '96, you may still need the parts store to clear the code for you, though.
Thanks for the tips everyone.. Turns out I used the truck this AM and after about 25 miles the light went off.. Turns out these Fords are self-healing, and I got my Sunday back for other errands ;-)
A 96 F350 is still OBD-I meaning you can pull the codes yourself. You should be able to find out what triggered the light even though it cleared itself. It's probably nothing to worry about, but it would give you an idea of what the computer didn't like.

Your right, 5.8L Over 8500 GVW & 7.5L Over 14,000 GVW, 49 States & 7.5L Super Duty 50 States are OBD-I with the DLC and a 60 pin PCM.
Please disregard my post above and EPNCSU2006 thanks for pointing this out.
Go do what puck1263 said above.
Thanks for the tips.. Called the parts store and they're telling me that the 96 and newer is OBD-2 at $95 to $200 for a reader.. The OBD-1 readers (according them is to 95) is only $30.
Anyway to be sure that my 1996 F350 uses an OBD-1 reader? Really hope it does..

Sure, just look at the driver’s side back corner by the hood hinge. If you have a Test Connector there and none under the dash then it is OBD-1. Also if it fits the test that posted above your last post it is OBD-1.
Funny, I see nothing back at the driver's side hinge, but I do see a data port sticking out under my dash.. Could be OBD-1 maybe? I am a 7.5L but not sure of GVW.. California car.

Sounds like you have an OBD-II, if the plug under the dash looks like this you do.
