Unhappy oil pressure 4.2/97

Just wondering if someone has had a similar problem or can help direct me. On start up oil pressure is fine. A few minutes after it idles down the pressure drops. Sometimes enough for the light to come on. Every once in a while it will go back up if I drive it down the road but, doesn`t stay up. I was thinking maybe it was the sending unit. Or possibly the oil pump. Not sure where they even hide the sending unit! Any input would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Brian

Exclamation

I would start with a new sending unit.If that don't work install a mechanical gauge and check the pressure.A good rule of thumb is to have at least 10 psi of oil pressure for every 1000 rpm.
If after you find the pressure to be low it could possibly be a bad oil pump,or bad bearings.

isnt one of the test modes give the actual oil pressure? or does it just give the same bs reading as the gauge?

here's the info I have:

OIL: Displays the code (0-250) for the oil pressure switch input to the HEC. Oil pressure gauge will indicate present oil pressure. Normal oil pressure (greater than 6psi) will display a value between 000 and 176. A low oil pressure or an inoperative engine oil pressure switch (less than 6 psi) will display a value greater than 176.

hi, if you any coolant in the oil it can cause the low pressure light to come on. with it being a 97 the gasket failure may have reared its head.
hope its just the sender unit,if it is , taking the wheel off to get to it is easyer than from under the truck, good luck bokker.

Thanks for your guys feedback. Drove this week and oil pressure was fine. Going to replace the sending unit when it acts up again and see if that does the trick. Shouldn`t be the engine going. Went through that at 70,000 miles. Managed to salvage the engine and rebuild it. Odometer is up to 130,000 now. Didn`t notice anything out of the ordinary in the oil. Thanks again !! When I get to the bottom of things I will be sure to post. Hope everyone has a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
