ok in the middle of the heat wave and i need to tow my car trailer. the truck tends to run a little warmer with the weather when towing. around 210, 220. Just wondering if there is a 180 stat i can pop in and if this would be ok? i know in a gasser 180 is a pretty good stat just in general to have in. my towing is all on the highway, and thats when it likes to heat up. and if its around 90 degrees outside and up i can't even think about usin my a/c. any help will be greatly appreciated. thanks.

I had over heating problems with my 1984 even with a new radiator every now and then it would get hot without towing. I couldnt figure it out so I took out the thermostat for the summer, when fall came the engine wouldnt make enough heat to warm the cab even after a half hour at 65 mph. I had to put the thermostat back in to keep from freezing.
After that summer the truck never overheated again but I never found the problem, all I know is those thermostats are a pain to get at.
Check your tstat and see if its mandated oem stat any other will restrict water flow and can cause overheat. Running no tstat can cause overheat with out any signs since the water flows too fast through the block not allowing enough time for heat transfer to happen
Yes don't get your stats from a local auto parts dealer only get OEM parts as they are not made the same and could lead to trouble. Diesel engines like heat up to 200 and your fan clutch should kick in over that. Did the fan clutch kick in to cool things off or not. If not I would look there.
