460 OEM Thermostat
I just replaced my factory OEM thermostat with a Stant Superstat. The parts dealer indicated that I should run a 195 degree unit, which is the OEM value.
I've been looking around Ford websites and see everything from 160- 195 degree stats out there. The parts dealer and the ford dealer recommended that I stick with a 195 degree stat.. There suggestion was based on the electronics within the truck, if the engine is too cool, the truck won't run correctly. I tow a fairly large boat to the river and temps can get over 115 degrees...
I noticed that after my new stat install, my truck is running just a little warmer...
Should I have gone with a 180 degree stat????
Thanks...

What was oem temp on the orignal stat?
Here is a little trick I found a while ago !
I had an 1986 460 motorhome that liked to run hot all the time.
I found a deisel thermastat rated at the same temp ,but had a higher flow rate .that means it would open at the temperature of 180 ,but would flow more coolant through it thus lowering the temps when it opened up more during hard pulls and hot ambient temps outside .It averaged 10-15
degrees cooler than orignal.
Don't know if this could help you or not .

I don't know what that year truck has for a stat in it!
but here's how I found the trick I suggested !
Find a napa or local auto parts store that has a stant or modine thermostat spec book ! in that book it tells the flow rate of each stat
I believe its gallons per/min or something like that I can't remember
compare the part #s and the stats themselves.Find one rated at the same temp as oem but at a higher flow rate (of course same design to fit the stat housing)
