Question injectior pump rebuilders?

I have a 94 IDI turbo that has a hot start problem. Thanks to another post on this forum I learned the trick about poring a gallon of water on the pump after it is hot and sits for 20 minutes, if the motor won't start before but starts after the pump is bad. This is exactly what happened. So I need a rebuilt pump. I have gotten many different prices on this pump. NAPA $580 or $950, Local Stanadyne dealer $1000 - 1200 if clearances are bad, Diesel care & performance of East Memphis $295.

I like the $295 price but I don't want to be sold junk. Has anyone bought on from Diesel care & performance?

Have you tried your Ford or International Dealer. Last I checked I was looking at $700 to $800 for a NEW pump and eight injectors. Pump alone was in the $400 to $500.

I would not go rebuilt, new pumps are not that much more expensive and it eliminated the worries about who did the rebuilt and whether they know what they are doing.

The injection shop I work with here in BC no longer re-builds the Stanadyne pumps. There just isn't enough money in it for them to rebuilt the pumps properly by the time they would pay for all the parts. As I said $400 to $500 for a new pump is what I was looking at.

The last rebuilt pump I bought was under $250 from a local diesel fuel injection shop with a great local following (as well as customers who come from hundreds of miles for service). This company takes special care in rebuilding their pumps and pretty knowledgable when it comes to diagnostics. I've bought several pumps from them in the past and when it came to my own, I asked a lot of questions.

If you are buying from a local company who is building their own pumps and has a good reputation from its customers, I think you should be fine. I wouldn't recommend buying rebuilt pumps off the shelf from someone that doesn't know where they come from.

Thanks for the advice.
The Ford dealer told me they only sell re-built units, the price was $488. I did find a local Stanadyne re-builder, Florida Diesel Injection Inc that sold the pump for $365 so I puchased one from them. I let you know how it goes.

I think $400 stock $450 for turbo upgraded pump. They also have flowed injectors for the turbo upgrade.

I bought a rebuilt from Diesel Care and performace several months ago, just to have a spare as my original is getting high time, Plus the price was lots better than I would have had to pay at the Ford dealer or NAPA, especially if mine went south. I was planning on installing the rebuilt this weekend. Will see how it goes. I also bought and installed rebuilt injectors from them which I'm happy with so far. Ill post back here if I have a problem with the IP change!

How difficult is it to replace the IP somewhere in the boonies? I'm planning a long trip using wvo, which is hard on IP's, and plan to carry a spare. Any speciality tools I should carry?

I think I used a 5/16 -12pt socket. Might be easier to find and it fit good. [Besides I had one]. Otherwise an easy job except for hanging over the front end. Oh one other thing I heated and bent an old box wrench sideways to about a 45 deg angle get the pump bolts off.

Heatnbeat, I read an article saying that was a 16pt. 5/16 thought it was a typo. Did you used the 12pt?

have a set of those open end wrenchs that fit on a 3/8 drive extention that worked great for the fuel lines. Only time I ever used it in ten years

I'd believe that was a misprint, I never heard of 16pt. Bet those 3/8 drive open-ends came in real handy. Darn pity I'm so tight!
