I am looking at a 2000 F350 PSD 7.3L with 107,000 miles on it. I have been told it is a one-owner truck and has a Superchip installed. I am a little leary about buying another used truck with a chip in it as the last one had problems. I can't say for sure the problems were related to the chip but...
I know there are different trains of thought regarding modifications to engines so how safe or extreme is a chip upgrade and can they generally be trusted?
The one thing that I would check before buying it is to remove the inspection plug on the left side of the engine and check to see if it has forged connecting rods or powdered metal. The Forged rods will have studs and 12 point nuts, the PMR's will have bolts.
The plug is located below the oil filter flange toward the rear of the truck just above the oil pan in the block. There are two of them close together. The smaller one is the coolant block drain. Don't remove unless you want a shower. The larger one just below the smaller one is the one that you want to take out and look inside. It helps to have a gooseneck flashlight (small hole). Once the plug is removed, rotate the engine via a breaker bar with a 24mm (27mm?) socket on the crank bolt until you can see the con rod fasteners. If they are 12 point on studs, that's great! You don't have to be concerned about a PMR rod breaking in half six months down the road if you buy it.
Kwik,
not sure I follow you. Are you saying that a chipped PSD has a weakness in the engine block if it has powder connecting rods. Or that after 107,000 miles and a chip the engine is overloaded? If I detune the chip, will it matter?

I think he is saying that the PMRs are a weak spot. If the guy has chipped it and beat on it hard, it might be an issue.,
The short answer is no, it will not matter. They get fatigued and the engine will run ok for a short while, and then a rod will just fall apart like broken glass while the engine is idling six months later. Forged rods bend under extreme forces but don't break in half like a PMR will.
So, is this a weakness only in trucks that have aftermarket chips? Why will some PSD have the powdered metal piston rods and others not? Is there any other way to know based on manufacture date of the truck? What is the life expectency of a set of powder rods under normal stock conditions? I think the superchip that is in it is not a multi-level chip and may only be a +60hp chip.

Supposedly those manufactured after Oct of 00. However if you are on the cusp, look at it to make sure.
Unknown. Depends on how you use and abuse it.
Shouldn't be. I thought they were a hand held tuner with 3 tunes?
I think you are correct. I just checked their website and found what they offer for the 2000. The 1705 3-way tuner or the DPI kit which is an ECM and propane injection. I hope it's the tuner cause max hp increase is like 110.

I think I would get an Oasis report from the dealer, that will tell you what service was done by dealership
I got one for my truck when I bought it a year ago.
I bought my 2002 with a Ford ESP ext warranty and had them replace the T/C and solenoids in the valve body, cost me $100 deductible.
I have only had to replace a bad glow plug relay, cost $100 with install
I love my truck, 7.3 is def the engine to have, IMO
