Am going to refill my M50D R1 trans with fresh fluid. Can Mercon V be used instead of regular mercon trans fluid? I take it mecon V is sort of an synthetic based fluid?
If you want to go synthetic, go ahead, but make sure the fluid itself is the same type.
Honestly...there are some rumors that synthetics promote leaks, so I'd recommend staying with Mercon/Dexron 3. The good old stuff. You have done the mod to seal the shift rail plugs on the tranny, correct?
rangerpilot, Yes i have got the mods done. learned that right here on fte. i put all new clutch package in three mos. ago, got her back apart cause roll/spring pin somehow fell out of the 1st./2nd. gear shift fork. thank you, yo have saved me absolutely hundreds of dollars, as i lurk the board looking for info. Thanks.
We try. Lots of people come asking for info, I only wonder how many don't ever join, just poke around, find the info, and scoot along. I did it for about two days then realized this was home to me lol.
Mercon V is actually a synthetic blend. For the manual tranny either Mercon, or Mercon V should do ok, but for the automatics, stay exactly with whats recommended, DO NOT use multi-purpose ATFs!!!
Use whatever the owner's manual specifies, nothing else. If it calls for ATF, use ATF.
RP, just to make things clear mercon V is ATF it's just a different blend than the older mercon blends, I believe Bob had it right. As I understand it, Mercon III is going to get hard to find in the near future for some reason, and I think your not going to hve a choice. Mercon V will work just fine but I would drain it as completely as possible not just use it to add to a trans that is leaking.

Yes, Ford now says that Mercon V is appropriate for all auto trannies that heretofore had required regular Mercon. IMO, Ford has (in all likelyhood) based this change of policy on the fact that most of the "older" automatic trannies that use to call for plain 'ol Mercon are either
(1) able to handle the "slippier" Mercon V in their original design without any issues,
(2) have been rebuilt with upgraded clutch components that can now better handle - maybe even utilize more fully - the different properties of Mercon V, or,
(3) are out of service by now in any case.
