Hey, whats the differenct between the two? Can the chip can change on the fly? What would you recommend? Do they make any difference power wise or functionality?
The chip is pre-burned, sometimes with selectable settings.
The programmer you adjust the settings yourself. Made for advanced users, as you're messing with imporant curves the engine runs off of.
For a first time thing, get the chip, it's been proven to make gains. The programmer you'll spend a LOT of time learning the basics before you make some power.
If you can find a programmer with pre-set settings or programs, go for it. Start there and adjust as you see fit.
I disagree Zach. The best thing he can do is get ahold of Doug and tell him exactly what tunes he wants for his driving style and needs. Doug can make more power than a chip and he can have 3 programs to choose from which he can change as often as he likes though not on the run but it only takes about 5-10 minutes and any dumb dumb can run the tuner by plugging it into the under dash port. He doesnt have to try and fine tune Doug's programs if he doesn't feel like he has the experience or the know how. I say you should contact Doug and tell him what kind of programs you want and he will burn the tunes specifically to what you want and you will be making more power or getting better economy in no time.
The sct tuner has 3 tunes installed into it, you tell Doug what mods you have, or plan to have, and what cctane settings you would like to run at. For an example, I have the 87 octane mpg tune, 92 octane torque tune, and 93 octane hp tune. There was a very noticable difference with any of the 3 tunes. Doug is a ranger specialist, the tunes are costumized, not generic like a mail order chip. The programer is hands down the best upgrade for the money. Doug does all the programing for you, you just plug, and play. A chip doesn't come close to matching the performace of the programer on a ranger. Give Doug an e-mail, he will gladly answer any questions you may have, his costumer service is excellent.
I wasn't talking about a programmer with pre-set programs. You'll notice if you read the bottom of my post I said if you can find one with pre-set programs go for it.
I was saying he shouldn't get a programmer with no programs and attempt to completely tune it himself with no good knowledge on the proper way.
You got that right Zach, I wouldn't even atempt a program on my own. On the tuner, you can even get a power cable to hook to your pc to down load tune adjustments and stuff, I haven't, but have heard others talk about it. You wouldn't want to adjust a tuner on the fly unless all your tunes were on the same octane, you could get some serious pinging. Another cool thing about the tuner is, that most people claim mpg increases under normal driving conditions, I did, of course not if you keep it floored, like your tempted to do hee hee.
YES, get the programmer u will never regret it u can tell the difference, which is amazing, I have the chip but would trade it in a heartbeat for the programmer.
