This is a direct excerpt from the Ford Owner's Manual, Page 206, foot note 5:
"... Some transmission fluids may be labeled as dual usage, such as
MERCON and MERCON V. These dual usage fluids are not to be used
in an automatic transmission that requires use of the MERCON type
fluid. However, these dual usage fluids may be used in transmissions that
require the MERCON V type fluid.
MERCON and MERCON V type fluids are not interchangeable.
DO NOT mix MERCON and MERCON V. Use of a transmission
fluid that indicates dual usage (MERCON and MERCON V) in
an automatic transmission application requiring MERCON may
cause transmission damage. Use of any fluid other than the
recommended fluid may cause transmission damage."
Not sure what to make of it but hopefully others here with more fluid knowledge could help out. It looks like you have reason to be concerned since the owner's manual is clearly warning you.

Your inquiry got me lookin' and I found this PDF from Motorcraft Fluids Division. It lists Mercon V for all our year 4R100 transmissions and does not show them producing a standard Mercon anymore.

You can't use Mercon/DIII in Newer Mercon V speced transmissions. At first Ford said not to use Mercon V in the 4R100 transmissions but has since resended that. Dexron III is the same Spec as Mercon. So yes it is still made but under the name Dexron III/Merc. Mercon V is semisynthetic and is supposed to be a better fluid than the older Mercon fluid. Ford may not make Mercon but there are plenty of OEM manufactures that make DIII/Merc.

MERCON V is semi synthetic if that's what you buy. It is dino if you buy dino, and it's full synthetic if you buy Mobil 1 synthetic ATF, and others, too.
Ford changed MERCON V to be compatible with older transmissions that used MERCON. Ford no longer licenses the production of MERCON fluids.
