Are the timing marks on a 429-crank at 12 oclock and cam at 6 oclock
because I swear when i took it off the crank was at 12 and the tick mark on cam was at twelve and the weight of some sort was hanging down towards 6. I am all confused now because of this book I got. Please help. Oh yeah engines out of truck.
Remeber that engines are four strokes. Turn the engine over until you get the compression stroke on the #1 cylinder and then line up the timing marks at the 12 (crank) and 6 (cam). I did the same thing a few years ago. happens to all of us. :7
Well thats hard to do since ive already put it back together. But it should be right if i put it back exactly the same right? The chain was so loose it was slapping the cover so i replaced gears and chain. I didnt turn the engine while i was doing this. Or the important question will it tear up my engine if it is wrong or will it just not crank?
Thanks for your help
If you got the crank at 12Oclock and the cam at 6oclock the timing marks should be aligned. If the engine is still out it's worth the trouble to take the cover off to check. I got a fancy three position gear on wrong once and it sucked a valve and punched it through the head. No great loss though, it was a c*&$y 454, and I hated working for that jerk anyway.
Wake up and smell the roses..the crank turns two times to cam one. when the crank is at 12, and the cam is at 6. number one cyl is in time (TDC, timing to number one cyl), when both the crank and cam are at 12. number 6 cyl is in time..if you did not pull the dist. all is in time.
