Yea!!! Finally got my overhaul kit from O Rielly's today, however I am having trouble getting a replacement converter. When I talked to them on the phone I was asked several questions about the size of bolt patterns and spline count. when I counted the splines I counted 31. They told me that wasent possible, the only had 24 and 26 available. Iguessed that I was simply miss counting the splines and they ordered the 26. Today while still at the store before paying for the parts I made the guy count the splines and he came up with the same count. there system and several other places that I went to, (NAPA, Autozone, Carquest) cant seem to find a replacement converter eather. This truck has been so hard to find parts for because it dosent seem to be right at every turn. For thouse that dont know what kind of truck I am dealling with, it is a 1971 F100 Custom. 390ci 4bl holly carbed moter, C-6 trans, two piece drive shaft to a 8.8, 9 in hybred rear axle. (OK, lol That dosent make any since right? It is a 8.8 axle (( or so I have been told)) built like a 9" rear axle. This was a verry hard axle to have rebuilt, and was finnaly done by a diffenarental and rear axle specialist in Springdale Ar. It had them scratching there heads for two weeks getting the parts and putting them together. The rear end is bullit proff and it was replacing the axle bearring that made me have the work done. By looking on the outside you would think it to be a 9" but the bearings are not the same, and thats what caused the confusion.) So hear I sit scratching my head, tring to figure out what is going on now. I Cant wait to get this transmission apart and see what the heck is fouled up inside, now that I have some parts to put inside. I will be intouch often because I am verry new at this. Thanks guys and please keep all the help comming!!!!!!!!!!!
Brad

Well guys it has been a long and slow road for me, but I have the transmission toredown. It looks like the intermedite clutch pack was welded solid. With great effort, I was able to seperate the steels from the fibers. (Or atleast what was left of the fibers. Not much it was like steel to steel all the way across the pack. Now all my other packs have 5 fibers in them, this one only has three. what can I do to change this? Also can I use dextron 3 atf instead of type f?
Thank guy's

If it's cleaned out with new clutches I say yes, you can use dextron/mercron II or higher. I say this because that's what I did and mine is still holding after three years of serious work. Clutch packs should be replaced with same number of discs. Without checking I would say that there is a certain measurement or end play for each pack. You replace with equal numbers, measure, if incorrect end play then make adjustments as needed.

A C6 does not have intermediate clutches.

Forward, direct, low/reverse.

It uses the band for intermediate or 2nd.
I think you mean the direct clutch pack.
That is the one in front that the band rides on.
You could look around for a drum that will use more plates.

The only way that I can keep it straight is to keep the parts in line/order during disassembly, like my book says to do. If you do the same you will be able to identify nearly every part.

Can I help mix the parts up? Adding bier helps the assembly go wrong.
My custom one man shop transmission rebuilder even after 45 years rebuilding takes him over an hour to assemble a box.

The direct, high / reverse drum is in front and has the intermediate band wrapped around it.
The forward drum is behind it.
They each have 1 set of clutches.

I have to say that flexable stainless backed band is a POS.
I believe the forged relineable band was only available for a couple of years back in the early 60's, this is what I have in my C-6 besides othe trick things.
The person who built it was the one who had a transmission design stolen which later became LENCO. Besides running Top Fuel years ago and designing a progressive 4 barrel propane in a 440 truck he doesn't sleep at night but thinks a lot. Every time I talk about some super wiz bang improvement for a C-6 he'll pull out some dusty rusty part he used years ago that's the same thing.

Stay away from that B&M crap, assembled in Mexico. AAMCO and others butcher up as well use cheap parts, production shops not quality.
On my first rebuild at my transmission friends shop he added extra parts to my pile of parts just to screw with me, I have to admit he had me going nuts.
With his presses and clearance set up gauges it was easy. Knowing what to look for in trouble areas besides modifications that takes many years in the trade and some never learn this.
