One question I have before I start is where the factory intake attaches to the front it is solid plastic with a 1" hole in it. Will it be benificial to "dremmel" this out or does it need the material there to support something?
I think its better to use the foam fender sleeve to get more air into the AIS than to modify the front where you may get water, snow and debris into the system. The fender sleeve will allow all the air you need into the box and will stop the filter minder from pulling down prematurely.

I agree with this system and have had NO problems with pulling in extra snow,crud...etc from the wheel well.

There are thousands that are running the AIS and Zoodad mod that never get their filter wet. I have onlt heard of this happening on two trucks, one was driven in a blizzard for 15 hours and the other in a huricane with horizontal rain. Look how long that snorkel is, plus it goes uphill, that would have to be one storm!!!! Probably not one you should bedriving in anyway. I drilled a series of 3/8" holes to keep any large debri out. The air from the zoodad is much cleaner air. Have you ever seen the area of the filter where the fender sleeve is cut after it has been run for a while, it is black!!!
The filter gets black where the hole is with the sleeve because a lot of air comes into that box through the fender sleeve. I would be disappointed if it weren't black. The Zoodad is a popular mod and seems to work well for most and so is the fender sleeve. On my truck I am just more comfortable getting the extra air from the fender.
Well the Engine Wiring Harness arived and while I have everthing except the motor out to replace it I am going to do the intake I was planning on using the sleeve but was thinking about getting a little extra air from the front. But as NChornet mentioned about the Hurricaines I will skip that since I do have to drive in them being a first responder.
Also if anyone has to replace the engine wiring harness take the passenger side fender liner off first.
Do the zoodad mod and cut you a piece of plastic that you can velcro in place when you have to drive in horizontal rain, which shouldn't be to often, it is not worth giving up the extra air flow.
The reason why the filter is black is because it is dirty air being kicked up by the tires. I also can't see how more air flows up from the tire, thru a offset hole in the fender, and then into the housing, then from a direct bath head on in the front of the truck? Just my .02.
I have the AIS with no fender sleeve and a Zoodad mod that is as large as the opening for the AIS. I installed it just before I went out on vacation pulling the trailer and grossing out at 24,000 lb, generating some crazy boost and EGT numbers.
My filterminder never moved until I drove through a bunch of insects and they got all piled up on the bottom of the filter. Then it moved 1/4 of the way. Removing the insects solved that problem.
I don't have any plans to use the foam sleeve at all, and would prefer to have the cleaner air from the front of the truck.
Rampage just intermittant shorts acting like CPS failure). Well the harness is in all thats left is the AIS this afternoon once the thermometer gets back under 100. I am going to work on a step by step doc on the harness replacement (forgot to take pics while in progress). think it took 6 hours total.
