Engine Randomly shuts off 2001 7.3

2001
F-250
7.3 Turbo Diesel
120K

The engine randomly shuts down for a period of time.

If at idle: It shuts off and will start right back up, no problem.

If under load: It shuts off, the tack goes to 0, sometimes for a split second, sometimes for up to 4 or 5 seconds. Then it turns back on and runs as if nothing happend.

When engine braking: The tack goes to 0, the engine is off, and it turns back on after a second or 4....

What is going on here???????????????

edit: The "Check Engine" light sometimes comes on but shuts off after a restart but the OBD II says no codes are stored...

Camshaft position sensor, or as ford calls it camshaft synchroniser (sp?) those have the tendancy to do excactly what you speak of.

yeah its under the water pump on the front cover, right side, low, over the crank pully, one 10 mm bolt, has the timing pointer on it, and i wouldent trust it from autozone, when it comes to electronic stuff go with oem. You get what you pay for!!

Where should I get it? Vato-zone says 2 days to ship it, not avaliable in stores.

Thanks for the fast help...

The International (IHC) dealer carries them for $100. Ford varies from $175-$200.

Ford dealer is $208. So is Napa. I want it by tomorrow so I'm not searching for a better deal.

Thanks all........ I guess this is a routine question around here, thanks for being so nice about it.

I myself would go to IHC (international) and get theirs. Comes in a blue oval stamped mfg by FORD, but about $100.00. do a search for "CPS" to get correct part # which I believe is 1807339C92 for a dt444. Don't tell them it is a ford, they'll laugh.
