I have a 300i inline 6. in my 1988 f150 custom. I changed plugs, wires, cap, fuel filter, the motor still has a rough idle. I am thinking of getting the fuel injectors cleaned. I was going to call some shops around my area for a quote .I dont no how the cleaning is done.do the injectors need removed to clean or can it be done with them in? whats the going rate for cleaning?
I'd start with running a bottle of fuel additive for injector cleaning first.
But if you think that the injectors are excessively fauled, then you could get an overhaul kit for them. The kit should include new screens and orings. You'll need to remove the upper half of the intake to get access to the injectors. The fuel rail will need to be de-pressurized before you start removing the injectors.
If you don't already have one, get a good maintenance manual. I believe that both Haynes and Chiltons will give you step by step instructions on how to do this.
Since this is the kind of thing I generally do myself I have no idea what a shop will charge, but the kit should run about $50. New injectors start around $250.
If you go this route it would be a good time to replace the valve cover gasket if it hasn't been recently. Odds are with an engine this old that gasket has developed a leak or two. Dealing with maintenance of the EGR and throttlebody would be advisable as well.

There's a guy on here who sent his fuel injectors out to get cleaned and rebuilt. Cruisin performance, i think, was the name of the place. I seem to remember it being about $12 per injector. You might want to check it out.
