vloney: Thank you again for your reply: My truck had not had the new updated program flashed into it yet I am real hesitant to let them reflash it. So far every time it has been flashed (5-6) it has ran worse that it did before the reflashes ever started.
It is curently in the shop now getting the flash wich I am sure I will regret later.
Are you hearing any negetive side effects from the newest flash.
I hear that since it does not get feedback from the EBS that it calculate the backpreasure and this is causing other problems like the three other trucks in the shop with mine.
I regret getting the flash on my '05. It lost it's power...even the turbo doesn't whistle as much. To get the turbo up to 20 on the guage, I now have to run the rpms much higher. This has lead to an immediate drop in fuel economy. I am wondering (and maybe vloney can answer) did the new flash change something in the turbo where it might have had a sticking vane or two, but now with the new flash these potential sticking vanes have become an issue to cause a power reduction? Just a dumb thought.
wanna know something that really will make you think? The new flashes take the egr valve out of the picture as well(not as much egr as before). With the wds, and ids, I can work the egr while running, you ought to hear how quiet it (the engine) gets. More egr, it gets quiet, less, it gets noisy. Now, do you need the egr valve?
When Ford replaced the 2nd turbo on my '03 PSD on June 20th the service manager and their top diesel tech said the new and improved turbo had tapers on the end of the vanes very much like enomra says there are "reverse cut" vanes. I'am confused. I was never told that there is a relief cut into the housing so the vanes don't touch the housing. I too only put 5-6K miles/year, mostly highway, and was told they "rust/seize due to low miles also. What is the real story on the "new & improved turbo"? I hope Ford gets it right soon before my warranty runs out. Not looking forward to $3500 bills to replace a turbo. I think the dealerships should at least have the right information to tell the customer. Being a diesel tech, I believe you have seen the relieve cut but is there another version that has reverse cut or tapered vanes? It would be nice to know when I talk to Ford if, no when, another turbo fails. Any help would be great. Thanks.
The new turbo definately does solve many driveability problems. There was a broadcast message on stars(ford dealer tv) detailing the changes to the housing on the turbo. The relief cuts are internal in the housing, so they are'nt visible. As far as tapered or reverse vanes, they may or may not be there, but as far as I know, not a factor in the improvements. When a turbo is remanufactured, they have the machining done.
Vloney: Correct me if I'm wrong, but the newest Turbo is not a re-man it is truely a new turbo. The ones they were useing prior to the new one were rebuilt.
03f2506.0 We need to keep in touch as we are experiencing the same types of problems and may need the same fixes.
Vloney: thank you for all your input, its great to get your point of view also.
Could you please give your assesment of the 6.0 both early and late. Are they indeed getting things worked out or are they just putting "bandaids" on the problems and people don't notice them as much. My point is that my truck from time to time would have an intake "flutter" (bark) and one of the programs lowered the shift point instead of fixing the problem. This in turn has lowered the fuel economy and will probably in turn cause more problems. I could list at least 10 things that have changes on my truck and I honestly can say that there has not been one that has been an improvement over what the truck was when I first purchased it in Dec 2002. I have had to live with all of these things because I bought one of the very first ones, something I will never do again. Beware 6.4 shoppers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
the problems were pretty much the 03-early 04 models(ones with the icp sensor behind the turbo). There is still problems, but nothing of the scope with the early ones. A lot of the problems, in my opinion, can be traced to fuel quality--vanes sticking-egr valves plugging up-injectors going bad. As far as the "new" turbos, when you order a new, improved turbo, you get a reman that has been machined.
vloney: how much boost will the stock intercooler system handle? I hear that the stock turbo will boost up to 27-28lbs so that is an obvious limit but what about these guys running chips that boost 35psi or so?
