I have a 2003 6.0 power stroke I bought used with 30000 miles just recently. The check enging light keeps coming on but it will go off within a couple of days and then come back on again. I thought it might be fuel or maybe the high heat where I live, about 115 degrees during the day. Any one experienced this before.
take it to one of the bigger auto parts stores (checkers, autozone, ect) and they will scan it for free, that will give you an idea of what is going on
Don't worry about the engine light. My '03 has had the exact same problem. I have been told by 2 different dealer mechanics that the problem is a loose fuel cap. I know you think I am out of my mind to believe that, but I do. Ever since I heard that, I make sure I twist the cap a couple of times after it starts to click to make sure it is tight, and haven't had a problem since. Try this and see if it works, and let me know what you find out.

Unfortunately in my experience non of those places could read the Ford diesel codes stored on my truck. Their scanners are only for generic OBD-II compliant emissions codes, and little else.
Also, don't ignore the light. Your truck is telling you what's wrong. Retrieve the code and you can go from there on how to fix it. It might be something very minor, like a gas cap, or it could be something more severe that's pending. You won't know until you check it out. Good shops will be able to diagnose the trouble code without a problem. Or you can get a comprehensive scanner like AutoEnginuity and diagnose it yourself.
Thank you for your advice on the 6l engine light. Although, since my last visit to the forum, the light came on again and I took the truck to Ford. The code came up as an EVAC code, which they explained was a loose gas cap. A little disappointing on one hand, because now I will wonder every time the light comes on. But, very happy on the other, because I love my 6.0 and hope that it lasts as well as my 7.3 did.
