Question neeeeeding info...

I drive an old 84' 6.9 4x4 (turned up, re-timed,5 1/2" exhaust)....but the problem is it is getting old.....wife has finally agreed to let me upgrade trucks...(yes, i got her permission....because if mama ain't happy ain't nobody happy....and besides i have to sleep sometime) but that is besides the point...i am debating between the regular powerstroke 7.3 (95-99)...but i saw a 94 turbo diesel advertised.........what is the big difference if any in power.....is the pre-powerstroke much weaker if any.............what is the hp and tourque on the pre powerstroke..........does any one know......and how much should i expect to pay............4x4,5 or 6 speed....no autos they won't hold up with what i do......thanks.........joe

You didn't say anything about a turbo on your 6.9, with a 5 1/2" exhaust? Anyway, if you have a turbo, you basically have a feeel for what a 94 IDI turbo would do. The powerstrokes are elctronic controlled, so if you plan on doing the work to it yourself, and don't understand the newere systems, you would be better off with a 94 or older with a turbo. With the right work done to it, you can run with the powerstrokes on an IDI. If I recall correctly, there really isn't a lot of power difference in the factory specs, but the driveability in that the powerstroke will definitely out run an IDI from a stop light is different. My 6.9 NA doesn't do too bad taking off from a stop, but then, I'm not racing it, just pulling a trailer, and don't give a rat's behind about taking off quicly with a trailer hooked up, just reasonably getting up to speed. Reliability, the IDI's are easier to maintain and such, and pricetag on the parts is cheaper, and as long as you take care of it right, it will last a long time.

well the reason i didn't mention a turbo is that i don't have one on it.......it is geared 3.55 and with the 4 speed i have to shift.....i'm intrested in pullin power....i have been known to pull between 14k and 16k up the plateau....i live on top and i have to pull a2.5mi 8%or better grade any time i go anywhere.....the old 6.9 will hold about 45mph empty....pulling a load i have to drop a gear in places then i get to shift up, then down, then up........or i can slow down and just pull in 3rd.........

Check this thread out: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/s...21#post3801921As far as working on the PSD (Power Stroke Diesel), I have worked on both and it is not that hard on a PSD, just a little different. Parts do cost more,(cheaper at International or ebay) but unless you get into adding more power the cost is not bad. The PSD is pretty reliable, and there are quite a few stock ones out there with over 350 K miles with no major repair, some at or around 500 K. For several grand you can add power modifications (bigger injectors, chip, etc.) and be putting down 300 plus rear wheel horse power.

I like the PSD, but there is nothing wrong with the 94 IDI turbo. Both are good engines and good trucks. You can't go wrong with either one.

Good Luck.
