i'm debating on buying a 1997 f250 4x4 with the 7.3l power stroke or a 1994 f350 4x4 with the 7.3l turbo, wich is the better truck? the 97 f250 is a short box extended cab and the 94 f350 is a long box quad cab. both trucks have a manual tranny, how ever the 350 is $4000 less than the 250. i don't really need a long bed 1 ton quad cab. any help would be great.
The 94 F350 IDI has less power and is some what easier to work on, (i.e. injector pump, no computer, no wiring to the injectors, injectors in the open, etc.) The 97 F250 DI has more power, you can also add more MODs to engine to get even MORE POWER (chips, bigger injectors, intake, etc.).
The ride on the 250 is better than the 350 but, the 350 does have the heavier D60 axles. Both are good trucks. Depends on what you need and what you like.
My personal opinion (see signature) would be for the 97 DI.
Definitely go with the Powerstroke. I've driven both in ambulance form. 7.3 turbo (94) sucked bigtime, 7.3 Powerstroke rocks (96). It'll give our new 05 6.0 a serious run for it's money. (7.3 much stronger in the low end but the 6.0 owns the top end)
Plus the PSD is easier to hop up, etc. It's rumored that Ford neutered the 7.3 turbo non PSD so that when the PSD came out, it would be far superior.
I've put a lot of miles on both engines pulling loads, and there is no comparison. The powerstroke makes a day of pulling much easier on you. The old 7.3's turn it into a job.
