Engine: 1994 351W coverted to Carb. with MSD ignition.
So I finally got my engine running for the first time after a rebuild. I set the initial timing to 10 deg. BTDC and it started right up. My question is; now that it is running, what other timing adjustments do I need to make before I take to the road? I assume I need to check the timing advance as the engine revs up, but don't know exactly what to look for or what to set the timing to?
Your initial 10º should be all that you need to do, although it probably wouldn't hurt to bump it to 12º or even 14º, as long as it doesn't ping with the timing advanced there. To check for your advance, (which is pretty much informational only, unless you have the distributor recurved) simply run the engine with the timing light at the pointer and slowly open the throttle while watching the timing marks. As engine speed increases you should see a corresponding increase in timing up to the point of total advance. If you have a tach connected you can see the RPM at which total advance occurs.
I'm more of a fan of timing by ear on a carbed engine, although I still like to know what my timing is set at.
