New engine build up

How far can i build an engine and still run it on 89/91 (low/medium) grade gas in a 302? I already have a Edelbrock Man/Carb and i plan on a cam and headers too, but i was wondering if i took out the emissions how far i could but up a new block to replace the tired old 79 engine.

Keep the compression to around 9-9.5 to 1. Watch the cam overlap, too much and you're bleeding off compression and lose bottom end. Too little overlap with too much compression and you've got an engine that like higher octane gas. Timing has a lot to do with it too. There are no hard/fast rules to how far you can build it up to. The combination of parts and timing, will determine what octane you can run. Want a livelier engine than your 79? Get a 5.0 out of a 94-97 F or E150, swap the intake for yours, add a set of 1.7 "Cobra"/Crane pedestal rockers add the headers and you'll have a nice rev happy, torquey 5.0 that'lll pull from idle to 6000 rpms. Leave the stock F4TE cam in it, that's the part that makes the most difference here, that and the better E7TE heads. And it'll be happy with 87-89 octane gas and the max amount of ignition timing.

Yea the 94-up V8's are EFI, but that's no bother with a carb. Just strip it down to the bare bones and it's all the same as a carbed V8. I'm running a warmed up one in my V8 Ranger. Only improvements I made are the roller rockers, and I hogged out the exhaust ports on the E7TE heads. I've got it topped with a Ford A321 high rise aluminum intake and a Holley 4 bbl carb. The F4TE roller cam works great with a carb, best one I've tried yet. Bump the starter and it fires off and idles like it's an EFI motor. I rarely ever have to give it a pump shot with the gas pedal to prime it to start. I don't recall what the 94-up 5.0 E & F150 hp rating is. I figure mine's putting out between 250 and 300 hp though. If you go this route, make sure the distributor you choose has a steel cam gear to match the roller cam. I've got mine running a rebuilt points distributor fitted with a Crane XR-1 unit in place of the points. I've also used this distributor in a 331 stroker motor. It's worked without a hitch up to 7500 rpms.
