Cool stuff guys - I'd love to be around those swaps just to learn what all to consider. But I have a question, too - why move to computer-reliant motors as opposed to swapping in motors that can stand alone?

The 4.6 is a great platform that, with occasional hiccups, will go a good many miles, but in the future will all the computers and modules be available as they wear out? Was this a consideration at all?

That same question can apply to carbs as well. There are alot of aftermarket FI systems out there as well as standalone systems (Megasquirt among others). I'm sure as long as there are people out there doing this, there will be ways to keep it running.

Parts getting worn out is inevitable. EFI or Carbed. With a little research, going to a stand alone EFI is very possilbe ( I havnt got this far, but am very close) Ill be using the Megasquirt system.
I guess really it will come down the replacement cost. How much to rebuild an older motor that is good to say 100K. Where as a modern motor is good to 200K. I know older motors have gone over that, but back when they were put out, were they really thought to go past 100K?? I dont think so.
Keeping that in mind, what modern motor can you swap in that can be found at a yard? On the flip side with the older motor, where can you find a good replacement or shop to rebuild it? You could easily be into a rebuilt older motor for the cost of 2 junk yard modern motors. 1 will get you to 100K and youll get 400K from the other 2.

Its late, but I thought I would throw that food for thought out there.

I see the point now. It's true that these modular V-8's do seem to last.

that is why I am making the switch. For the cost of rebuilding the old 360 and c6 tranny, i purchased a 2005 grand marquis with only 78k miles. I know have most parts i will need to replace the front end and put in a newer motor / tranny combo / disk brakes.

Wow it has really been a while since I posted here. Not much has changed in my project. On my project for those that need a quick recap, I put a 2005 Grand Marquis 4.6 2 valve in my 68 f-100 along with the front end suspension from that vehicle. Unlike 72 I am attempting to use all the original wiring and computer so that means I will have to use the original sending unit from the vehicle. I was for the longest time searching for a way to use the stock Grand Marquis sending unit with a custom tank without paying for a custom tank. Too expensive. I think I found an alternative and that is using a basic fuel cell, aluminum, and then making the simple alterations to fit the larger sending unit from the 2005 Grand Marquis. I will be hopefully this summer running fuel lines from the tank, if it works, up to the motor and seeing if I can get ignition. I still have to make a simple bracket for the fuel cell to make it bolt up to the frame. I was not able to use the 72 mustang tank like others have talked about since I was going to use the stock sending unit. I would have had to still alter the 72 tank. If this all works out then I will be posting pictures and hopefully show some progress.

I just realized you were probably talking about another project.
