will a 78 302 replace a 86 351 with no problems?
will a 78 302 replace a 86 351 with no problems?
Ok i had a blown 351 in a 86 f250. Now i found another engine and i was wonderin if the power steering and ac brackets will work. Its a 78 302. Are all the accessory mounting brackets still the same on the two engines?
Yes.. brackets for a 302 truck from the mid 80's will accept all your existing accessories. FYI.. The brackets on the EFI trucks fit both motors because there is a pair of holes where they mount to the timing cover that accounts for the extra width of the 351 block, but I'm not sure if the older brackets are the same. I'm just mentioning this and I'm not suggesting you use these newer brackets because those motors also use a single serpentine belt for everything and the front-back offset is most likely different as is the mounting points for the accessories. My point was to suggest you look at the brackets you have to see if they have this provision, and if not you definitely need 302 brackets.
And just be aware that this 302 is going to be really weak compared to the 351 you had.. particularly if you had the 351HO with the 4bbl. If it's just to get the truck operational and you're not doing any heavy hauling you'll be OK but if not there are a few things you can do to really wake the motor up that won't cost much like swap on some E7TE heads off an '87 or later motor and install a better cam like the Comp XE250H(Grind #35-230-3). This '78 is a smog era motor with low compression and a puny cam that produced about 150hp, the changes I mentioned fixes both issues and bring it up to a more respecatble 250hp territory.

Looks like the brackets maybe a little different, the alt bracket is different, the power steering is just a lil different, i'll try to use the power steering from the 302 to see if it will match up with my power steering pump. Then ac i'll worry about later. Yes I'm just trying to get the truck running because its been sitting for so long and has never run right yet. So its time to get it going. Although else looks like it will work. Its still the 6 bolt bellhousing, the exhaust manifolds match, the distributor plugs looks like it may work. I also got the 302 flywheel and motor mounts. As long as my alternator bolts up and the power steering i'll be good. I'll let u know how it goes.
Both motors use the same motor mounts.
And the 302 switched from a 28oz balance to 50oz in 1981, while the 351 has always been 28oz. That means you can reuse the flywheel or flexplate from the 351 if it's in good shape.

one more question what about the bracket for the throttle cable. Where does that bolt on to the intake manifold? and Will my throttle cable work?

Exhaust manifold installed with new bolts.
One thing i noticed is that the water pump pulley does not exactly line up with the crankshaft pulley. Weird. I guess thats another thing i will have to remedy. Maybe some washers will put the pulley back in alignment.
