Grease

Just wondering what type of grease is being used for the front end.
I have used Penzoil Marine grease, Mercruiser 24-C, regular generic, Mobil1 synthetic and now Valvoline semi-syn. All to my dissatisfaction. It seems nothing stays in there, then again driving on the roads in and around NY, maybe I am asking for too much?
oil/lube every 5K.

That's about right. Make sure the rubber boots are in good shape. I'd just use the cheap generic grease, with the sever duty that many of these vans see it won't stay in there much past 3k miles. May I ask why you're changing the oil every 5k? It's pretty obvious that you're doing a LOT of driving. The shorter interveral on the engine oil will actually be more beneficial.

I have done a lot of UOA's at 5k with the MC oil and they were always fine. Actually, I go 7.5k with the Mobil 1 7500 also with UOA's.
I can't stand changing my oil.

Just because the UOAs are coming back in the "acceptable" range doesn't mean the oil is still doing it's job... After about 3500~4000 miles ALL oils start to break down and leave some dirt. They also lose viscosity. If you don't like changing it yourself go to the quick lube...

I use blue wheel bearing grease and stay away from the "pink" poly lubes or marine based lubes because they turn to a sort of parafin wax when subjected to water. I have had some actually clog the zerks.

Regular grease works fine. I grease the frontend of my van just about every oil change. Just a couple of pumps is all most of the joints need at that interval. I also change my motor oil every 5K miles.

With this service interval both the front end parts and the motor have held up well. I actually haven't had to change any of the ball joints, tie rod ends or center links as they are all tight. The motor too (5.0) is still in excellent shape with only normal oil consuption, good compression and no smoke. The van has right at 250K miles.
