Did all trucks come with the spare tire under the rear gas tank (except the truck with the tire in the side, the SCS, i believe) If so does anybody sell them or do I need to search the bone yards.
I'd go with the boneyard idea. They are not difficult to custom fab if you have to. Looks like there used to be one on my truck, and I just haven't gotten around to that piece yet. Bigger fish to fry...
Camper specials did or some people went with the front tire holder covering the grille
That explains why our 78 f250 CS has one and the 77 f150 does not. Will one fit on the f-150 or was there special bracing and support under the truck when it came with one? Why I ask is the spare is loose in the back now but I'm about to get custom wheels/tires and I don't want the spare to get stolen out of the back of the truck
I don't really like the look of the spare over the grille, I like the the grilles on these trucks and mine is hard enough to see because of the deer/brush guard on the front. Also I don't really want to go with the mounts that are in the bed because they put holes in my tuck and I don't want to loose the cargo space.
If anybody has any suggestions on how they secured their spare tire please let me know.
If your lucky you might find a slide out tire carrier. I found one a couplr years back in a wrecking yard and it fit perfectly under my 78 sc camper special. The old boy at the yard said that his only seen a couple come through in his yaers there. Haven't paid that much attention to the catalogs, but I've never seen one in any of the catalogs I've got.
The one on my 77 F250 is stock and is really nice. It has a latch lever that releases it and it drops to the ground. You then pull on it and it slides out and the spare clears the truck so that you can pick it up to put on the vehicle. You do the reverse to put the spare back.
Look around the bone yards for a F250 about that year and you should find one.
My dad has one on his 79 Ranger. I have a parts truck of the same year and model but it doesn't have it on there. The only difference between the two is the 300 6 and 351M. My dad said his came with the truck (bought it new way back when) so it might not have been just an option. But I'm not the wisest person here either.
There's a "do it yourself" tip in the "articles" section under bed, body, accessories on how to do an under the bed spare tire carrier for a 73-79 if you feel adventerous.
I have a under the tank spare mount on my 77 F250 that was factory standard.
In my area, spare mounts that go under the bed are very hard to come by. You may have to search several trucks to get all the parts. LMC does not have to whole rig, just some of the pieces.
My carrier was removed early on in the trucks life due to high theft rate of the spare. If someone wants the spare tire/rim, you will be hard pressed to find a way to stop them from taking it.
Just be wary if your truck spends most of it's time outside and you have a very nice expensive spare.
I've since gone with the least expensive I can find.
