I have a 1988 F150 Lariat, (302 EFI). I'm getting no fire from the coil pack to the distributor. I have replaced the coil pack. I was told that the ignition module is the likely cuprit. The ignition module is located near the base of the distributor. Would anyone know what type of screws or nuts secures it to the distributor, and if it is possible to replace it without actually pulling the distributor out? Thanx Fellers...........
The TFI module is easy to replace, and you don't need to pull the distributor or even take the cap off. It should held on with two screws with 1/4" (I think) heads that require a thin-walled socket to reach. Once you get them out pull the bottom of the module straight down while wiggling it a bit. There are three spade connectors on the top of it on the left side that go straight up into the distributor, and there should be some dielectric grease on the back which will tend to hold it in place a bit.
Be sure to put new dielectric grease on the back of the new module as it helps to provide a heat sink to pull heat away from the module, which is what kills them.
I just replaced a TFI module on a 92 E150. The screws required a 7/32" semi deep thin wall socket. My craftsman deep socket fit the hole in the TFI but the wall was too thick to allow the socket to set over the screwhead. In a pinch you could put a regular deep socket on a grinder and turn it into a thin wall.
We bought a $5.00 tool at autozone which came apart after one use. The 7/32" socket was swaged into a top piece. Typical of lowend asian tools the hole in the top piece was machined too large and it stripped out. They did replace it for free. If it happens again we will probably silver solder it back together.
Prior to reinstalling we applied the provided grease and used antisieze on the screws.
i use a 7/32 craftsman nut driver. the tool is just the right size to fit in the holes. i walked into sears with the dist. to get the right tool. you will probably have to remove the dist. if you use the nut driver. cheers, garsten
Thanx All....Gonna give it a shot...I will have to at least rotate the distributor a bit in order to get to the rear nut. It sets too close to the thermostat housing to get any type of tool on it. MUCH ABLIGED!!!!!!!
