please take the time to read this , long story short my truck is down(not running at a friends house need to move it asap) i thought a simple alternator change would be this hard . I replace the old one it had a side plug 2 pronge and a ground and hot on the back. The new one has a battery, starter, fld (don't know what that stands for) and ground. the wires i was runing before the change was one red from the fire wall, yellow and green / black.
can some one tell me ware the wires go on this new alternator?
also should i have a wire from my starter silanoid (sorry for the spelling)?
Battery - the big wire that goes to the starter solinoid the same side of it that the battery + is hooked to.
Fld- goes to the regulator feild terminal ( it is white on the 66-67's )
last wire on the right of the regulator connector if you are faceing the connector
Ground - is ground
the last term is stator( not starter) goes to the 4th wire on the voltage reg if you are faceing it
on 66-67's it is a white with black stripe wire.
Maby this will help. sounds like someone changed the wireing colors.
I Ask you this, Do you have a seperate regulator in the engine compartment somewhere ?
if not someone might have installed a single wire alt with internal regulator if so I can help you out with that to.
i don't think i have a voltage reg, sounds bad i am not the best with wiring. on my fender well i have a plug that supplies the pig tail. man i am lost , do i need to go buy a voltage reg it was running before.
Ok It sounds like someone modified it to a internal wire alt. 2 prong plug almost sounds like a 80's cheby alt. do you still have the old ALT ? I hope so, take the alt back that you got ( it is for a external voltage regulator type ) and have the parts guy get you an exact replacement for the alt you had in it. It is not unusual to find many modified systems in these old trucks. What year is it ?
If you cant take it back all is not lost. i can E-mail you a wireing diagram for a external regulator you will need to add some wires and connectors but it can be done. PM me py clicking on my name. Il check back in a while.
well the old one is at the parts store , i have the replacement one that the truck call for i need your diagram my PM is not working send send it to mtpcage/at/yahoo/com. will it still work with out the regulator?
1965 4x4 with the battery under the floor board, starter relay on the fire wall.
Yes you will need a regulator to make it work, I have e-mailed you a wireing diagram for a 1967 which you can use to wire it. just look at where the wires go from the alt to the reg and wire them just like that. their is also a alt light on the dash.
To be honest you should call the parts store and see if they still have your old alt and can get a replacment, it would save you a pile of time.
I dont know, maby a late model alt, you would need to talk to a parts guy who realy knows his stuff. I converted to 1 wire but converted back when the modual failed . the modual was like $80.00 you can buy a lot of regulators for that. the last regulator i got was a solid state one and it's lasted a long time so far. It make take some time to wire but in the long run I think youl be ahead.
I hope this helped ya , I know what it's like to be stuck brokedown and need to get moveing.
You had a GM alternator. You need to go get your money back for the Ford unit and buy a 12IS GM alternater and install it. The plastic plug will fit, the batt wire to starter relay will fit and these GM alternators are a real solution to weak charging systems on our old Fords. Put your battery on a charger overnight before you start the truck. There is a tech article here on FTE that covers this installation.
