My 79 F1504x4 keeps draining the battery, about once a week. In March I replaced the starter, alternator, battery, starter solinoid, and cleaned everything attaching these parts. I noticed when I swapped alternators there wasen't a ground wire, my 71 F1004x4 has one though. I figure its either the voltage regulator or the missing alternator ground. Is an alternator ground important? The motor is a swapped-in '74 351W.

The alt should be grounded through the case to the engine.
To test for battery drain, unhook the neg batt cable and install test light from cable to batt terminal. If there is a drain, it will light up. Now unhook one thing at a time until the light goes out (be sure the doors are closed - dome light will cause a false drain). Start with the voltage reg and alt, then try each of the fuses in the fuse box. If one of the fuses turns off the light, then reinstall the fuse and unhook each item that the fuse runs until you've found the problem.
Popped in a new voltage regulator, no difference. The truck starts fine with a jump, idles perfect, but it won't start without a jump. The battery is new.
If you got the altenator from somewhere like Autozone or Advance hook the ground wire to the field spot on the altenator. Seems like the wire ran to the solenoid. I'll have to go look.
