Question 4x4 concerns

I recently bought a '04 Ranger XLT 4x4. I didn't notice it when I first bought it, but within the first few seconds after I start it, I hear and feel a hard pop from the right hub. Almost like its disengaging. It doesn't seem to matter though if the 4x4 is on or not.

Another concern that I have, is that at about 40 mph, I hear a steady "womp"ing noise coming from the front end that changes tempo with the speed of the truck, but will seem to go away after it drops below 25, or goes over 50.

And last for now, not all the time, but a lot of times when at higher speeds for longer periods of time, I start hearing a fast rattling noise in the base of the shifter that as well, changes tempo with the the speed of the truck, except it doesn't go away until I stop. The position of the shifter and the position of the clutch doesn't matter and putting it in Neutral doesn't help or change anything either.

Is any of this normal? For awhile I was just thinking that I was being paranoid because it was a new truck.

Thanks,
Gerald Tyson

You should be paranoid, that shouldn't happen. I have an 04 4x4, and I have never heard that. How many miles does it have on it? You may need to take it to the dealership and have them look at it. If you are still under warranty, you are in luck.

Agreed, it doesn't sound normal.

It's hard to say, but my initial impression is that maybe a wheel bearing is shot or you are having a problem with the brakes at the right front wheel end (sticky caliper for example). Your '04 Ranger doesn't really have front hubs in the conventional sense; it uses a "constant engagement" system with a live front axle, which means that your front hubs are always engaged. 4WD is determined at the transfer case only.

I have an 04 4x4 xlt, and I have no frontend pop, or shifter rattle. However I have heard that the factory goodyears will make some road noise when they get some miles on them.

Time to start investigating: push, pull, rattle, rotate, and everything should feel smooth. Maybe your CV joints are on the way out. No way to tell without actually investigating...
