I have noticed an odd sound that is very distinctive when the truck is running when cold, it goes away after the truck is up to full operating temp. The best I can describe it is a womp womp womp sound. You can't hear it in the exhaust but is very prominent from the intake. Is this something to be concerned about or is it normal?
I can hear it with the air leaner in place just by walking to the front of the truck. Can't hear it in the cab or like I said in the exhaust. After a short drive it goes away or after it has run for a while and is at full operating temperature.
Should go away when the coolant hits about 70, when the cold start high idle and advance kick off. Mine makes a similar sound since it has an open element air cleaner.
if you guys can hear anything besides a massive rattling on cold start, your timing advance may not be working,or the timing is too retarded in general.
she should be fairly dang noisy in the am.so much so,i doubt you should be able to hear her sucking wind or whatever it's doing lol.
edit, does it sound like this? "womp" "thud" bad lifters?
if so,
how miles miles you got on her? what have you been running for oil, have you been letting her run low on oil and do you have an oil pressure gauge? if gauge, what has her pressure been at warm idle lately?
That is the exact same noise my truck makes! I've been keeping up with the oil changes although I did just move from KS to MA and I worked her pretty hard coming across country. It was loaded to the max with tool and pulling a car trailer with a Subaru Forester on it and it was loaded as well so it could use another oil change soon. Oil pressure is the same it's always been, on the higher side of the normal range. Oil used is Rotela, can't remember the weight but its marked for Diesel engines. The truck has 197k on it. My truck hasn't gotten as loud as the one in the video and its not audible at all once it is at full operating temperature.
I'll bet its a burnt or sticking or intake valve, Most likely sticking I dont think it would be a broken spring...You should do a compression test to confirm they are all in working condition, Drop d valve will kill an engine.
I don't have a compression tester that will read in the 400-500 range but I may have a friend that has one. I'm trying to sell the truck because I just don't have any need for a 3/4 ton truck anymore but being in New England now everyone wants 4WD and I'm having a hard time selling it. I hate to spend much more money on it if I don't keep it.
