Our 96 Explorer's speedometer is not working. The needle jumps all over the place. This is causing the transmission to shift hard. We have replaced the speed sensor in the transfer case, we have replaced the rear wheel speed sensor in real axle. Any other ideas?
I'm going to go out on a limb and assume you don't have an electronic speedometer, and that what you do have is a cable driven speedo. I have a 92 Explorer and a 94 Ranger that are pretty much identical to each other.
I'm guessing you have two problems. My 94 had a very erratic indication, which got worse as the speed went up. It stayed somewhat steady until the speed went over 20 mph, then it would jump all over with seemingly no pattern in it's fluctuations. I replaced the nylon gear where the cable goes into the tranny with no help. I'd have to do a search and find out who here on FTE recommended a speedometer rebuild to me, since I don't remember. He was absolutely right when he said the jewelled bearing that the needle rides on wears out and causes this problem. I removed the instrument cluster from the vehicle (not an easy job) and had it sent to a "speedometer repair shop". $143.00 later it works perfectly and there was no need to mess with the odometer.
As for the shifting hard issue, my truck did it before the repair, and it's still doing it after...I think that's another issue that I have to deal with.
