Just bought this truck a couple of weeks ago. My speedometer jumps around quite a bit, especially at higher speeds. I don't have any other problems (no ABS light, etc) except the cruise doesn't work. I've already replaced the nylon gear where the cable goes into the transfer case. Any other ideas?
I wonder if the cable end that goes into the speedometer needs to be greased?
When I pulled and swapped in a tach cluster last year, it was recommended to do that...just a dab of lithium(?) grease on the pointy piece that spins the speedometer needle.
I could imagine that the pointer end is catching somehow because it needs a lube job. I hope that is all that for that!
You may need to check the entire length of the cable housing for a kink or pinch. And like Alfred said you could add a bit of grease to the cable end that hooks up to the speedometer and make sure the cable goes into the speedometer correctly when you reconnect it. The other possibility is that the cable in the housing is going bad or the speedometer itself is getting bad. You can get a new speedometer cable from some of the better auto parts stores like NAPA or Carquest. You could get another speedometer from a junk yard, but you may have to buy the whole gage cluster to get it.
Thanks for the responses. It has a cable, so it's not electronic. Working backward from the transfer case, I used a variable speed drill to see if I could isolate the problem. I'd already replaced the gear in the transfer case, so I removed the VSS and the bouncing needle was still there. After removing the cluster (and what a "cluster" it was!) I tried the drill on the speedometer head itself...the bouncing remains. Cowboy, it looks like you hit the nail on the head, thanks for the link. Any suggestions on what kind of shop to take it to for a refit?
Time to find a speedometer shop, and with soooo many vehicles using electronic speedos for like 15+ years they are getting to be very hard to find. I'd start with the yellow pages where you live and if that fails ask the dealer service dept. If you are willing to mail it out, that should open up many doors of opportunity.
