Fuel Pressure Release

Does anyone have a simple way to release the fuel pressue so that I can take off the manifolds and change gaskets? The shop manual goes into detail regarding some special tools. Thanks, Fnsane

hi, in my experiance the fuel pressure leeks down when stood for a while but there is a releaf valve (like a tyre valve) on the fuel rail with a black plastic screw off cover. in side just push back the valve but protect your self by putting a rag over. just do not do this with a hot engine. good luck bokker.

Thanks, I appreciate the advice. Do you know how I can turn off the fuel pump so that I can get compression readings without having gasoline being pumped to the engine?

Pull either the fuel pump relay or its fuse while the engine is idling. Wait for the engine to die. This will bleed the pressure down to about half of what it otherwise would have been.

Finish the job by depressing the stem in the Schraeder valve while protecting yourself as suggested.

You can also give the inertial switch a sharp rap with your hand to trip it. Just remember to reset it when done.

I believe the "official" method is to remove the inertia switch (located behind passenger side kick-panel). Start the truck and let it runs until it dies, which will be just a few seconds.
When done replace the switch and all is abck to normal.

Actually, from the 97 service CDD, the official procedure is:

µ 1. Remove the schrader valve cap and attach EFI/CFI Fuel Pressure Gauge.

µ 2. Note:
Open manual value slowly to relieve system pressure. This may drain fuel from system, place fuel in suitable container.

Open the manual valve on EFI/CFI Fuel Pressure Gauge and relieve fuel pressure.

l This will drain some fuel out of the system. Place fuel in suitable a container.
Since 99% of this site's readers don't have and won't buy a proper fuel pressure guage, the idea is to accomplish the same result without causing an undue risk of injury or damage.
