Sorry if this is a repeat question. Which headlight doors interchange between 1967-1972. 70-72 look like they do. Would the 72 carry a 70 part number. I used to know this kinda thing. Also concerning trim levels, was 67 the last year for the Custom Cab? Was it the first year for Ranger? If it is what is the difference and which one is the top of the line
Thanks Harold
67-69 headlight doors interchange, as do 70-72. Thus, if you have a 67, you can use headlight doors from any 67-69 model.
I can't give you precise info on when the first and last years of the "Custom Cab" and "Ranger" trim lines were, but they were still in existence in 1969. In that year, there were essentially three trim lines: base, Custom Cab, and Ranger. The Ranger was the highest trim line, with the most chrome and with fake woodgrain on the dash and door panels. There was also an "Explorer" package that was optional on Rangers. As near as I can tell, all the Explorer package added was a few more pieces of trim and an Explorer badge on the glove box door. Trucks with the Explorer package have the same trim and exterior emblems as all Ranger trim trucks.
Yes they were just called Custom, starting in '70 the word "Cab" was dropped. The deal is, now there were 4 trim levels instead of 3. The Custom was now the base model, followed by the new Sport Custom, Ranger, and new top-of-the-line Ranger XLT.
In '73, the Sport Custom was dropped so you were back to 3 trim levels with the base model Custom, Ranger and the Ranger XLT.
A new option became available in '75 for the Custom models only. Called the Custom Decor Group, it included bright moldings around the windshield and rear windows, bright drip rail moldings and bright hubcaps. Inside the cab, you got color keyed floor mats with insulation plus the Ranger seat.
Trim levels stayed the same for '76. As far as the Custom being a Custom Cab, it depends on how you look at it. Yes, the Custom was once called the Custom Cab but the trim levels are one step apart. It might have been confusing to use the name Custom Cab because in mid '74 Ford started aggressively marketing their pickups by choice of cabs: Regular Cab, Crew Cab and the just introduced SuperCab. JMO of course!
The only trim level I've ever seen the Explorer package on was the custom. It ran from 68 to the early eighties. Not to say it wasn't available on other levels but it seems to be promo package for the low level trucks. A 'poor man's Lariat', if you will.
Not in '69. In 1969, the Explorer trim option was only available on Rangers. The Ranger was the top trim package (the others were Base and Custom Cab). If you ordered a Ranger with the Explorer option, you got some additional flashy trim parts. My 69 is so equipped.
FYI, the XLT and Lariat names didn't come along until the 70s.
I should clarify my remarks. The custom based explorers I've seen
were all 73-9's. Dennis, did you say you had a 79 Ranger based
Explorer? Have you ever dug out the build sheet from under the seat to get more info? And yes, I do know the Lariat came out first in 79 as I once owned one.
What problem are you having with the carpet, Dennis? The reason I asked about your Ranger is because so many guys swapped the custom nameplates for the Ranger ones on those and I was curious if it was original.
