Started out simple...now it's a HUGE problem...HELP!!!

My 1967 240 6 cylinder started acting up yesterday. The truck was running very very rough, I thought it was the choke, but it's not. When I shut it off in the driveway, it wouldn't start. The solenoid just clicked. After about an hour or so...it started. This morning, I was on my way to school and it did it again, same exact thing. I came out from class and the truck wouldn't start. I had to get a jump to get it started. I began driving it home and it started running rough again. Then it began to backfire...the second time it backfired, it blew the welded seam apart on the muffler. Does anyone know why this happened and where to begin chasing this problem. I know I have some electrcial problems, but why the rough running and backfiring??

First off, Take the battery to an auto parts place and get it tested.
To make sure it is Good or Bad
Intermittant Ignition problem !

The back firing can come from:

1)an open-then closed circuit in the ignition switch.
2)by turning the key off / on while driving.
3)bad timing or worn out distributor.
4)Ign.Points
5)Ign.Coil

I had this happen on my 72 with a 360. It backfired so hard it split the seam on a new muffler. I hadn't had it long when this happend. It started right up and then run crappy all the way home. I changed the points and plugs and have never had it happen since.
