This is something i jes noticed when i disconnected the pipes from the manifolds, inside the right pipe(the side the distributer is on) its black, the left pipe is not black,, there is a missing hose/tube type thing that came off the manifold(exh) that connects to the carb,,a messed up intake valve, stuck choke i dunno... the truck has been pushed to the utmost limit and beyond many times....it still runs the same or better though thats what gets me. any help is greatly appreciated..ps- flames shoot out of the exhaust 6 inches to 4 ft in lenght
one thing is your blowing out flames i would check your adjustment on your lifters and everything. sounds like some of your exhaust valves aren't shutting completely.

The lifters dont tap, there is no suspicious noise, i ran it recently without pipes just manifolds and im pretty sure that when i made some flamers they were only shooting out of the black sooty side,, wires are the same all round that goes for plugs to.. its a 1970 390-2bll,81,248 miles,no rebuilds i dont think(it still had an original radiator hose hose on it,so i doubt major stuff has been tinkered with)its been over heated several times with no damage being done(until the radiator was cleaned),now it warms up the when i get out on the high way it cools down to much.the faster it goes the colder it gets, it gets hot, not to hot if ran at low rpm in 4th,it cools back down when the revs get up there then it gets almost back to were the needle sits when the thing isnt even running, gas guzzling is getting worse,24 liters(6 and a half gallons)to complete a 40 mile trip on the high way.-6.1mpg...versus 9-11mpg i used to get.think that could be the intake valves, exhaust valves , or both i would like to know more about that.it can do some pretty heavy acceleration most of the time but some times it just doesnt open up like it should and it will sputter when it gets to the 4000-5000 rpm range. the exhaust is a single 4 foot straight pipe with a glass pack that i welded on... thanks for replying
