Hi Guys I'm new to FTE and have 2 quick questions.I bought a 77 F-150 for parts and the owner said that the 460 has a steel crank. How can I tell if this is correct? When I took the motor apart it had carbon all inside what would cause this? Thanks for any help.
WEll until an actual moderator moves this thread, I will answer your question. Unless it has a very new aftermarket crank in it, the previous owner is full of it. The 460s NEVER came from the factory with forged steel cranks, and the aftermarket has only within the past 9 months even had them available for that engine.
There were some 429s that had them, but they are different, The boss9 had a shorter snout on it, and the 79 and later truck engines had a bigger snout on it that could be turned down to the passenger car size but those are the only 385 series engines that came with forged steel cranks.
Hi and welcome to FTE. Ford didn't put steel cranks in 460's, but the previous owner might have. All 460's came with cast-iron cranks from the factory, casting number were 2Y, 2YA, 2YAB, 2YABC, or a 3Y. If you see any one of those casting numbers on your crank, it's cast-iron.
Carbon (soot) is caused by a rich running engine environment .
ie:
Lots of Gasoline to Air mixture not getting burned.
Ever hear the expression " Go out to the highway and blow the carbon out of it"
Another way to de-carbonize an engine is with an atomizer <
Put some water in a spray bottle and lightly spray it into the air horn of the carb and rev the engine.

In which case that's a brand spankin new rebuild as these cranks are brand new . . . but not likely. I'd say the seller doesn't know what he's talking about.
And carbon on the inside of the engine is caused by not letting hte engine warm up or using penzoil, carbon in the pistons is rich condition. inside the engine if you have actual carbon buildup it was run with basically no rings and excessive blowby, usually it's sludge by improper maintanence.

Welcom to the forum bluevt. I think the guy who told you this was just trying to make a sale. Gee isn't this just like horse trading??? Carbon would be in the cylenders, if it is some place else in the engin it is sludge hard or soft. caused by several diferant thinges. like to long between oil changes not enough ventilation, blow by, short trips ect.
