I used a 390 flywheel and clutch on my 460 swap so I would think a 460 and flywheel and clutch would work out just fine. I have no first hand experience with that but I think it should work.
Not trying to hijack here but I have a 77 470 will a 85 460 flywheel work on it or was there a balancing change.
Or I am replacing a 79 400 is there any chance the 400 flywheel will work on the 460.
A 400 flywheel will not work on a 460, I do know that for a fact. In 1985 the 460 would have been externally balanced so an early 460 flywheel will not work either, nor will a 390 fly wheel. You will need a flywheel from a 1979 or newer 460.
Ok the 460 went away in 79 and up until that time was not offered with a standard so you are saying there is no stock application that will work. If I'm understanding right when the 460 reapeared in 83 and was available with a standard they were externallt balanced and the flywheel will not work on the 77 460. What has been used is there an aftermarket flywheel available with the correct balancing for the early 460's. Thanks.

I used a 390 flywheel on my 460. My 460 was originally a 1972 engine, I am still using that crank. It's internally balanced and so is a 390. Therefore both engines have a neutral balance flywheel and the bolt pattern on the end of the crank is the same.
There are aftermarket flywheels available through various locations. Check L&L, Jeff's Bronco graveyard or Jegs. The 390 flywheel will fit and has the proper tooth count. I'm currently swapping a 460 in place of my 400 in a 79.
Good luck
they went to externally balanced in 78 or 79. if your crankshaft only uses a spacer (about 2 inches long) behind the balancer it is internally balanced and you can use a 390 flywheel. if the spacer has a counter weight on it (hatchet weight), then it is externally balanced and you would need a newer style 460 flywheel.
